The latter could be dated anytime from the reign of Solomon to the time of Israel’s exile in Babylonia.Although the author was an Israelite, he mentions nothing of Israel’s history.Job’s unnamed wife says to him, “” (2:9), but Job stands firm. Biblical scholars suspect him to be a later addition to the book, mostly because while the first three friends are mentioned in the introduction, Elihu appears from nowhere.The story then stops being a narrative and takes a philosophical bent, with Job’s friends Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar, each in turn, saying that all reward and punishment comes from God. Either way, Job denies sinning, and calls on the heavens to testify on his behalf.I believe the Book of Job was written during the time of the patriarchs, 1900 to 1700 BC.This date makes the most Biblical and historical sense given the evidence, some of which I will list below.God’s explanation - if you can call it that - is that Job, being a mere human, cannot hope to understand his actions.
The striking differences in both genre and attitude between the prose prologue and epilogue (Job 1:1-; Job 42:7-17) and the poetic discourses in the middle of the book (Job 3:1-42:6) suggest that an earlier version of a folktale was expanded with the dialogues.
Liberal scholars insist the Book of Job was written around the 6th or 5th century BC.
They believe that Sumerian stories containing themes similar to the Book of Job were written around 1700 BC.
